We’re delighted to share that we’ve been shortlisted as a finalist in not one but two categories of this year’s SBID International Design Awards, among some of the most inspiring design talent working globally today.
The Cumberland Hotel, London is a finalist in the Hotel Public Space Design category, and Turtle Bay, Chelmsford is a finalist in the Restaurant Design category. Both are UK entries, and both need your vote.
The awards are evaluated by a panel of distinguished, industry-leading experts for functionality, innovation, creativity and technical execution, an SBID Award is considered one of the most coveted accolades for design excellence. The Cumberland Hotel, London: Hotel Public Space Design
Our work at The Cumberland transformed two very different spaces within one of the West End’s busiest hotels, each designed to do a distinct job for the guest.
Lírica is a contemporary Spanish restaurant with a hint of Ibiza chic. Soft peach, terracotta and blush tones run through the open-plan dining and bar area, while circular pendant lights hang at varying heights from dark ceiling panels to create a sculptural focal point. A mirrored ceiling reflects the activity below, and a digitally printed mountain skyscape spans the full curved wall of the lounge. We zoned the interior so that the restaurant transitions seamlessly from daytime dining to an evening social destination.
The VIP Lounge takes the opposite approach: an elevated sanctuary within a busy hotel. The space functions as a listening bar, where guests curate their own soundtrack from an extensive vinyl collection. Walls and ceiling are drenched in a rich crimson, offset by soft pink ceramics, green marble and walnut timber. We designed a bespoke timber console with turntables to reference the hotel’s musical history, and a textural carpet fitted to the wall adds warmth, intimacy and acoustic quality.
For Turtle Bay Chelmsford we delivered a full redesign and rebrand, trading bright primary colours for a sun-bleached palette of warm corals, soft turquoises and layered natural textures.
A new linear bar in textured blue tiles with a terrazzo top anchors the space, and now includes a dedicated barista station to support the refreshed all-day offer. A timber pergola forms the central focal point, echoing the beach-bar inspiration, while the open kitchen is clad in coral-toned patterned tiles to add vibrancy and theatre to the guest experience. Bespoke floral upholstery ties the interior to the exterior terrace awnings, giving a cohesive identity inside and out.
